Updated Terminology!

My previous terminology for assessing the state of Cognitive Function dynamics felt clunky and unappealing to me, and it greatly prevented me from writing the articles I really wanted to, but for the longest time I had no idea how to replace it. I tried some different ideas in articles that never found their way to publishing but now I think I've finally got it - since the function balance is every bit as important as a balanced diet, framing them in the same way only seems right. So, from this point on, functions are:

  • Deficient

  • Sufficient

  • Excessive

This is perfect because there's no inherent sense of judgement in these terms. They're very neutral. You don't go to the doctor and they tell you: "you're low in Vitamin D because you're a human failure, now get out of my clinic before I taunt you a second time!" It's simply an observation of a state, with either positive or negative implications. And this is exactly how cognitive functions should be treated. Not like a niche special interest or any kind of judgement towards oneself or others, but as an assessment of Trajectory. I especially like the term 'Sufficient' because it reminds me of Winnicott's idea of the "Good Enough Parent"; a reminder that aiming to be "good enough" takes the pressure off of being better, which releases resistance and allows it to happen more naturally.
